Artslam June Finished!

And a bit early, even! How about that?

Under the break is everything. The whole shebang. Some of it you've seen, some you haven't.

Eeeyup.

Forever-Dad Syndrome.

Another week! Hopefully we'll all get to bed soon. I'm sure town is more interesting than the middle of nowhere like this.

Falling behind on one thing...

...leads me to falling behind on so many other things, I swear. I fell behind on my daily artslam stuff, so I thus fell behind on posting here. Here's where I play catch up!

THINGS I SHOULD HAVE MENTIONED:

There was an Outrunners update on Wednesday! I will always feel the need to flog this damn thing here.

Also! I'm making a new quilt! Again. This time it's the Chain of Faith quilt, which I am going to rename as the "Chains of Caith" quilt due to my inability to type. Anyway! It's a step up from what I've done before, requiring many more pieces than I've ever needed for a top before. I have done a terrible job getting pictures of it in progress, so here you have the only two in existance:

Quilt in potientia

Once all the pieces were cut and bagged for safe keeping. I was quite nervous at this point.

X approximate

The quilt as it sits now. None of the bigger X blocks are sewn just yet, but that will likely occur today.

And now... now I'll put a cut on the entry and stick up some of my catch up images from artslam.

Sister's Quilt, Finished!

Yes indeedy! The quilt made for my sister in honor of her high school graduation is finished. Once upon a time, it looked like this!

Sister's quilt avec Patches

Now it looks like this!

Quilt! And the dog.

The animals kind of adore sitting on my projects. But they won't look at me while doing it. Clearly they are guilty things.

Quilt! On the fence.

These upright metal... parts of an archway are so nice for framing quilts. A pity I can't center things.

Quilt! And the backing.

The backing and the front together! I dig the colors.

Quilt! And the quilting.

The quilting! With rainbow thread. The idea was kind of scribbly casual flowers. It's anybody's guess if I succeeded.

Quilt! And the binding.

Speaking of succeeding, the binding this time is the best yet. I think I might finally be getting the hang of this thing. Not -quite- right, but we're getting there!

Up next is either another quilt or my ~*seekrit*~ project, depending on how soon the things for that gets here.

Comic!

Another week, another update!

Days 9-11: Catching up editions.

Still behind after these, but making progress! Sometimes, I like to do goofy warmup shit before getting into any sort of "better" arts. Generally this is something unrelated to what all I'm doing up for artslam, so you guys tend to be safe from the first terrible nonsense of the day.

Today, however, since I'm kind of behind and it -is- more or less related, I slapped a bit of color on it and y'all just get to suffer through it.

Nightmare King ponies are ridiculous and pretty much uncanon, but eh, so it goes. I am still halfway tempted to try and make one up from the hairless pony base I have laying around, if only I could figure out a way to twist around the wings.

More skulls! I'm hoping that eventually I will remember that skulls look more like this than the way I tend to make them. You'd think I'd be more consistent or better at them considering.

Hi there, little one! Where do you think you're off to? Should you be casting a shadow like that while standing in the middle of a bigger shadow? What are you, anyway? All this and more we will discover eventually tomorrow (hopefully).

Day 8: Oops I fell off the wagon.

S'true, this was a bad weekend for artsing. So much for not missing any days. I will do my best to catch up this week!

Nothing interesting today, some skull skreebls. Man, it's been entirely too long since I've been not-lazy with skulls.

Day 4: Things in the dark edition

Within the castle, there are places where even the light does not go. No amount of torchlight will penetrate, and not even the King will venture into them if not needed. It probably goes without saying that there are things that live in them.

This would be one such critter who lives in the shadows. He's big, he's got no eyes, and tends to somehow travel between the dark places without coming into the light.

As a bonus, have him in another color scheme, brought to you by imgur randomly deciding that white was really teal. I have no idea.

Day 3: Chompy Critter Edition

Yesterday there was a little critter we saw being cuddled by our buddy the Nightmare King. Let's have a better look at them today, shall we?

So these critters don't currently have a name for themselves as a whole (I've just called them "critters" thus far). They are a squat furry beastie, much longer than they are tall. They are egg-hatched, and approximately the size of a housecat when they are hatched. At full maturity, they reach between four and six feet high, with lengths between twelve and twenty feet from nose to tail.

The masklike covering over their faces is actually a hard bonelike covering that grows naturally, allowing for protection of their heads, as well as allowing them to charge foes. Their large claws and sharp teeth are also fearsome weapons, making them effective protectors of the castle and the areas around it.

The ones that live in the castle generally take up residence in a lower dungeon level of the castle, near where their broodmother (who I did not actually illustrate for y'all today, oops) resides. She is much larger and more bad tempered than her children, only just kept in line by the King. There is no visual clues as to the gender of the creatures, and and there has not been little evidence about as to who is fathering all of them, but the King is completely content to let them sort that out themselves.

There is actually a second group of beasties that are more humanoid than their bestial siblings. These are collectively referred to as harpies. They are capable of somewhat awkward flight for short distances, as well as gliding. Despite their obvious physical differences, they also seem to be hatched, often right beside their beast cousins. Harpies are often seen bearing masks similar to their siblings, but they are masks, rather than a natural growth.

While both varieties are capable of understanding speech and following commands, the harpy variety are regarded as more intelligent, being able to speak themselves (though they rarely have much to say). They are often either posted as guards or as caretakers of their beasty cousins.

Tomorrow I'll see if I can't finish up with some miscellaneous things out and about in the King's castle, then maybe I can't get into some of his victims or some such.

Artslam, Day Two.

Today let's natter on about Mr. King again today. As he -is- the king of his realm, he does live in pretty fancy digs. Yes, only a castle will suffice for a king! But what might his castle look like? Maybe something like this!

This is a pretty goofy looking castle, which I cannot decide if it is too goofy for him or not. I kind of dig the idea that some of the turrets and the like might not be exactly attached to anything else, so I might go with that a bit further. I'll likely come back to this in a few days. Maybe even a map of his homeland, though I don't think I've ever managed a map that doesn't look like a bunch of nonsense.

Anywho! There's plenty of room in the castle, what on earth could be in there? Well, there's his throne room, his private quarters, rooms for his monstery-guards and the like live, a few rooms he himself doesn't like going into, and of course the library. It's got all kinds of books with all kinds of knowledge that is probably not a good idea to have even written down, much less kept all in one place. However! It is also got the book with the magic that allows him to snatch the things that brings about this storyline.

This is a super-super rough scribble, I know, but it's going up here anyway. If only as a baseline for it reappearing later on in a better form, as I kind of want to fix it up and see if I can turn out something at least semi-finished out of it.

Anyhow, to end it out today, here's a little bit of nonsense with him and one of his baby critters. They get bigger than that, but are pretty cute when they're baby.

Okee, see you guys tomorrow :3

Artslam, Day One.

This month on the Artslam challenge I'm going to be working on a headworld (headplot?) I've had poking around for a while that is loosely titled "The King of Nightmares and the Dream Fighters", which generally gets shortened to "The Nightmare King's Nonsense" because that's how I roll.

Anyway, the basic jist of it all is the King of Nightmares lives off in his dream world, where he pokes around into the minds of anyone who might happen to be sleeping throughout the multiverse, thus bringing them nightmares. His world is pretty well shaped by his will, and more or less entirely populated with things of his own designs that do whatever he asks whenever he asks in mindless devotion to him. He is, however, bored with lording over everything in his world, so he takes it upon himself to try to bring in something from somewhere else to entertain him.

Through perseverance and some magics found in an old tome, he manages to port in items from sleeping beings into his world. What follows is a string of thefts from various worlds to test his spell, eventually ending up with flat-out kidnapping two entire people.

Due to the way in which the thefts occurred, the victims (or the one closest to the victim, in the case of the kidnappings) are aware of who and how they occurred. Seeing this as an even better way to relieve his boredom, the King invites those he stole from to come into his world to try and reclaim their things.

Over the course of the month I'd like to actually flesh this out some, as all of this word spill tends to only show itself as pictures of the King himself. It'll be nice to have more to it than vague handwavings.

Today, however, we get yet another picture of the King of Nightmares.

Over his time as King he has grown tired of maintaining a constantly fearful appearance and has slid into something a bit less so. While he does keep up some appearances, what with his exposed bones and entirely improper wings, the coat is decidedly not frightening.
